| Описание | Cool. Coolsingel In 1930, after Amsterdam and The Hague, the third branch of luxury department store De Bijenkorf opened in Rotterdam. The pre-war Bijenkorf was an elegant functional design of Willem Dudok with large glass walls and an impressive atrium. During the bombardment, two thirds of the 'most modern department store in Europe’ was destroyed. The remainder was demolished in 1957, because of the 'window on the river’. Meanwhile the new building on the Coolsingel was finished, close to the stores on the Hoogstraat and the Lijnbaan. The new Bijenkorf was a closed box glass-walled building, with only a narrow vertical slit windows. The facades are covered with travertine, partly hexagonal honeycomb shape. The panels are chiseled, that is, with a ripple pattern. This pattern in alternating directions to bring the vibrancy of the wall increases. Arch. Marcel Breuer 1955-57. Breuer designed a sleek, rectangular block. According to the Baseplan, there had to be worked with a double perimeter at the Coolsingel: a recessed portion and a protruding part on the corner of Van Oldenbarneveltstraat. Breuer refused to adapt the shape of its building and the solution came as a large sculpture on the corner of the Bijenkorf by Russian sculptor Naum Gabo, so the urban rhythm remained intact here. The Thing, as it usually called, is the largest constructivist art world. The metal sculpture was built in the machinefactory 'Hollandia' and transported to the Coolsingel in 1957. The image was "a metal latch to close the life of a city". |
